How to Control Your Emotions

Have you ever been in a situation and you could literally feel your blood pressure rise higher from your child dropping ice cream on your new shoes from JustFab or from your children going back and forth in the car from who is right and who is wrong. That one time standing in the line at Disney World and someone cuts in front of you. How about the time you had so many projects at hand that you just begin to cry?

Controlling emotions is a very difficult task, and one that we all struggle with at times. But in life, there will always be things that happen that will challenge us and trigger our past, and with some guidance and techniques we can all overcome this and learn to control our emotions! 

5 Ways to Control Your Emotions 

1. Take a deep breath and count to five before reacting 

When faced with a difficult situation, it can be easy to become carried away in the moment and react right away without truly thinking things through. By simply pausing for a moment and taking in a deep breath, this can instantly calm down our minds and give us some perspective so that we can react in a calmer manner. 

2. Take a different perspective 

It is easy to get stuck in a single mode of thinking and view things from a specific point of view. We all view the world and things that happen to use through a lens. It is like looking at the world through dark tinted sunglasses. But by changing the lens, we can change our view and therefore change our perspective! We all make a choice in every moment whether to view things negatively or positively. So, try taking a different perspective and see how it can change our entire view of the world! 

3. Forgive and let go 

Resentment and anger are like taking poison and wishing that the other person will get hurt. These negative emotions have absolutely no benefit for us and in fact they can be very harmful to our mental health! Of course, there are times when anger can be healthy and important, but often it will serve us much better to learn to forgive and let go. It will not only bring greater peace into our lives, but it will prevent future negative emotions because the emotional trigger has been let go of in the first place. 

4. Seek guidance from a higher power 

No matter what religion or spiritual tradition you may follow, faith has the power to shine light into some of the darkest moments in our lives. Belief in a higher power gives greater meaning in life and it also provides us an outlet to turn to when we need guidance and do not know what to do. Seeking guidance from the universe both humbles us and can help us tap into our intuitive selves, bringing us onto a brighter and healthier path. 

5. Engage in an outlet for your emotions 

When all else fails and we cannot control our emotions, the best thing to do is to direct those emotions in a different direction. But it is important to find an outlet that is healthy and can turn those emotions into something positive, such as exercise, meditation, or uplifting music, rather than something more draining, like watching TV or scrolling through Facebook. 

We all struggle at some point in our lives to control our emotions, but there are a few simple things that we can do to prevent our emotions from controlling us. Controlling emotions will bring greater peace and happiness into life, which is surely what we all want in the end of the day!
