How to Be Organized & (Almost Stress Free) When Moving to Another State

Three years ago, I moved from Georgia to Florida, and it was undoubtedly a challenging, yet exciting time in my life. From working with long-distance movers, packing all my belongings in cheap moving boxes, and trying to stay sane, it sometimes got a bit overwhelming. Though relocating is never entirely easy, there were some moving tips that helped me during the process, and I want to share them with you so you can make your moving venture a positive and organized one.

Research About Your New Location

You will not get the entire feel of your new home until you are roaming the streets and discovering it first hand, but researching ahead of time is ideal for getting a sense of what you are walking into. Find local stores and entertainment nearby and look into things such as state taxes. You may also want to consider visiting the location first to see if it is the right fit for you. The more you know beforehand, the less stressed out and blindsided you will be.

Create A Moving Checklist

Something that helped me immensely to stay organized was creating a moving checklist. This allowed me to have a visual representation of what I needed to do, and it was a way to keep track of it all.  I never had to stress about forgetting anything important, like canceling a utility service before leaving, getting a new license, and establishing legal domicile for taxing purposes.

Hire A Reliable Moving Company

One of your tasks on your checklist should be to find a reputable long-distance moving company. These long-distance movers can ensure your valuables make it from point A to B damage free. I suggest looking into getting quotes from a few different insured and licensed places that have excellent ratings. In addition, many moving companies provide packing and cheap moving boxes so you can save some money in the long run on this aspect.

Before you start boxing your things up, create a milestone timeline plan.  Start with packing all your non-essentials first, items that you will not need in the weeks leading up to moving, such as books and home décor. Then just before moving day, pack the rest of your more critical things, like dinnerware and toiletries. This is also a great time to go through each of your belongings and clean out/donate what you do not want to take with you. To be even more organized, label your packing boxes, which will save you hassle when unpacking later.

Uprooting yourself and moving to a new state is a scary thing to embark in. It is not easy to relocate to a new place that you virtually do not know anyone or where anything is. The best thing you can do for yourself is to get organized and manage your stresses right from the start to set a good foundation for when you actually move in. Even though it can be overwhelming, from the moving process to settling in, humans are incredibly adaptable, and you will begin to get accustomed in no time.
